Running is great for your child’s health but it’s essential to bear in mind a few things so they enjoy the Bupa Junior or Mini Great Run safely and get the most out of it. Please read this important advice about how to prepare for the run, and what to do after it.

Ready To Run?

It’s key that your child is fit and well enough to take part in the run on the day.

Hydration Advice

It’s important that the body stays hydrated with the right amount of water so that it can function properly.

All Kitted Out?

Unless your child runs regularly, there is no need to buy them specialist running shoes.

The day before

Children use up more energy than adults relative to their body size, so to ensure that your child can make the best attempt possible at the run

Ready Steady Go!

Try to ensure your child gets a good night's sleep before the run, but don't worry if they don't, or wake up early - this is quite probable given that your child is likely to be excited about the run.

After the Race

It's a good idea to decide on somewhere to meet your child after the run. He or she may be feeling tired and anxious to find you so it can be helpful to have already agreed a definite meeting place.

Top Tips

  1. Don’t let your child run if they aren’t well enough to do so on the day – there will always be other events.
  2. Always warm up before running, and cool down properly afterwards.
  3. Make sure your child’s trainers are comfortable and fit properly.
  4. Try to ensure that your child eats something high in carbohydrate a couple of hours before the run.
  5. Your child will receive a bottle of water in their finisher’s pack. Make sure they have a drink of this straight after the run.
  6. Celebrate your child’s success – it’s a great achievement whether they ran or walked the run.
