Early in 2016, we at the Great Run Company revealed our ambition for the Great North Run half marathon to boast a participant from more nations in the world than any other single running event.

After becoming the first of its kind to welcome our millionth finisher over the finish line in 2014, we set out on the mission to recruit runners from as many United Nations countries as possible to take part in the iconic half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields, on September 11, 2016.

More than 90% of the 193 UN Member States will have an entrant on the start line, with runners recruited from Azerbaijan to Zambia - ensuring that this year's Great North Run will be the most global event we've ever organised.

We are confident that we will have more countries represented than any other running event in history. To put this in perspective, the men's marathon at the 2016 Olympic Games had 82 countries represented.

The global representation will ensure the world's biggest half marathon has an even greater atmosphere than ever before. And, if you were born in one of the countries listed below - why don't you come down and join the party?
