Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run - statement

Like you, our thoughts are with the friends and families of everyone affected by Monday evening’s terrorist attack.

Following consultation with the Greater Manchester Police and Manchester City Council, we can confirm that the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run events on Sunday 28 May, will go ahead as planned. Read more >

All entrants will receive a detailed pre-event email in the next 48 hours regarding plans for Sunday, which may differ from those previously issued.

However please note that all start times are planned to remain the same.

Thank you for your patience over the last few difficult days. We look forward to welcoming you to Manchester on Sunday.

INFORMATION ABOUT PACK COLLECTION

If you entered the 10k after 10:00 on Thursday 18 May, or if your run pack has not arrived through the post, you can visit our customer services team who will be based in the Great Run branded marquee in Albert Square (opposite the Town Hall steps) at the following times:

  • Friday 26 May (12:00 - 19:30)
  • Saturday 27 May (12:00 - 17:00)
  • Sunday 28 May (open from 07:30)

10K Course

The start line is on Portland Street near the junction with Oxford Street. The finish system will remain in operation until all runners have crossed the line on Deansgate so all runners will receive their time and Finisher's Pack.

Look out for…
Take in the views of Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, the award-winning Imperial War Museum and The Lowry. You will also pass the famous cobbles of Coronation Street’s new set. Perhaps the most significant landmark will be Beetham Tower, the 47-storey skyscraper which almost marks the finish line for you!

Bands on the Run and charity cheering points
We’ve got a great Bands on the Run programme for you this year, with 10 music zones, DJs, live bands and Inspiral Carpets’ legend Clint Boon’s Boon Army stage at the halfway point to lift you for the second leg. We’ll have two Key 103 Wall of Sound sections for you at 6k and after 9k, featuring Key 103’s specially chosen playlist to drive you along. If this isn’t enough then the Manchester Metropolitan University will be cheering you on from 7km before you reach the Manchester University Go Zone at 8.5k, which offers even more music and encouragement. There are official charity cheering points on the course from Cancer Research UK, We are MacMillan, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and The Christie, so give them a wave as they cheer you on!

Please note: the course may be subject to change.

Half Marathon Course

Take a look at what the 2017 Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run Half Marathon course has in store for you!

Manchester's newest half marathon will take runners of all abilities on a 13.1 mile tour of the city. The route passes by two of the UK's most iconic football grounds, the Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford, as well as the Imperial War Museum and Albert Square. The Mancunian Way will also be closed off to vehicles for one day only, allowing participants a safe, unique running experience through the city. Please note there is a low speed bump on the roadway by the Etihad Stadium at approximately 4.75 miles near the turnaround point on the half marathon course. Signage will highlight this.

The course will provide you with plenty of atmosphere to keep you going... With bands on the run, charity cheer points, musical entertainment and thousands of specators shouting your name - you'll stay motivated all the way to the finish line!

Get Sunday 28 May in your diary, and don’t forget to share with your friends to get them involved too!

Please note: the course may be subject to change.

Travel & accommodation

Travel

Allow plenty of time to get to the start. Manchester has an excellent public transport system with its internal network of trams and buses, so please consider these options wherever possible. If you do decide to travel by car please take note of the road closures before travelling. Please don’t rely on satnav devices as roads might be closed for the event.

The best place to plan your journey to the start line is via the Transport For Greater Manchester website, which lists road closures, public transport services affected by the event and alternative routes into the city. This site will be kept up to date with regular travel detail so keep checking it for new information.

Driving into Manchester City Centre?

Avoid a fine. Look out for bus gate signs on Portland St & Oxford Rd.  A bus gate is a stretch of road where priority is given to buses, cycles & black cabs. Find out more >

Event Location

Manchester not only boasts a population of over half a million people but it also offers visitors a wealth of activities to get involved with.

You could try a bit of skiing or get your football fix, take a trip to some of the best shops in the UK, or maybe visit a museum or a brewery; there really is something for everyone.

For more ideas on things to do in Manchester you can go to: www.visitmanchester.com.

Both the 10k and half marathon courses give runners the opportunity to soak up the fantastic Manchester atmosphere, as well as a chance to see some of the best sights in the city! Make sure you get Sunday 28 May in your diary - you don't want to miss this!

Everyone who crosses over the finish line of the half marathon or the 10k will receive a goodie-filled finisher's pack, an exclusive technical training t-shirt, and the all-important symbol of achievement... the medal!

And if that's not enough, after your run we recommend sticking around to soak up that post-run party feeling in Albert Square where there's a charity village, merchandise stalls, massages from Find a Physio, and of course, the live music and bands at Spinningfields. This year's event saw thousands of participants and their supporters chilling out over a well-earned drink at the Oast House stage in Spinningfields, entertained by local bands, DJs & post-run warm downs led from the stage... so why not come and join them in 2017?
