The 2017 training day has now closed

The Great Swim Local training day, on Saturday 27 May, provides the perfect opportunity to train with like-minded swimmers at Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre, Cumbria. 

The training sessions welcome all abilities and will allow you to train at your own pace in preparation for your upcoming Great North Swim or SwimRun events. 

Training leaders will be on hand at all times to offer advice and some handy tips. Make sure you choose the session which best suits your ability.

How to enter


Introduction to SwimRun

Session time: 14:00 – 16:00

The session is aimed at those who are interested in taking on the brand new SwimRun challenge and offers a combination of practical and classroom sessions. 

This session will be split as follows...

45 minute Q&A session to include:

  • What kit to wear
  • Tactics and considerations
  • Maps and planning
  • What to do if you need assistance
  • Questions and useful tips including mental preparation
  • Great North SwimRun course information will be referenced throughout the session

15 minutes to get changed into your wetsuits/run/swim suit

1 hour session includes:

  • Getting used to swimming with different kit - shoes/floats/paddles
  • Swimming with your partner/tactics/tethered swimming/supporting eachother
  • Entry and exit into the water - considerations and safety points
  • Running with a partner/pacing/keeping warm/nutrition
  • Putting it into practice in a mini event at the end (swim/run/swim/run)

Introduction to SwimRun

Introduction to Open Water Swimming
(beginner session)

Session times: 09.00 – 10.00 and 10.30 – 11.30

The hour will cover:

  • Wetsuit advice
  • Combating those open water anxieties and event day nerves
  • Acclimatisation and getting a feel for the water
  • Breathing effectively in the open water
  • Basic open water skills, including sighting and drafting
  • Question and answer session

Price: £24 per person

Introduction to Open Water Swimming (beginner session)

Intermediate session

Session times: 12:30 – 13:30

The session is aimed at those who have experience in open water and would benefit from a little reminder and confidence boost.

This hour will cover:

  • Acclimatisation and getting a feel for the water
  • Breathing effectively in open water for maximum performance
  • Basic open water skills, including sighting, drafting, turning around buoys
  • Stroke development
  • Mass-starts and skills practice around the swim course
  • Exiting the water safely
