The 2017 Great East Swim will offer two brand new distances when the event returns to Suffolk this summer.

The addition of the Great East Swim250 and the Great East SwimRun will mean that event day on Saturday 17 June will be inclusive to a range of ages and abilities.

The Great East SwimRun is an outdoor running and swimming challenge and is the new benchmark in adventure races.

The SwimRun will involve teams of two people taking on a journey across the landscape of Alton Water, taking on both land and water as they navigate around the beautiful Suffolk countryside.

The event features four swims and three runs across an 11.3km course and is ideal for those who have a sense of adventure, determination and a will to have lots of fun.

The event is aimed at those who want to work as a team, tackling the whole course and its challenges together. The swim course includes the start and finish areas of the Great Swims and the running courses feature something for everyone, with a combination of flat surfaces and sharp climbs.

Entries for the Great East SwimRun are priced at £100 per team.

Additionally, the Great East Swim250 is designed for those who are keen to try an open water swim but don't know where to start. The 250 metre distance swim is open to anyone aged eight years old and over and is suitable for all abilities.

Swimmers of the Great East Swim250 are encouraged to make the event a great day for all the family, with children having the opportunity to get involved.

Anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult, allowing children and their families to enjoy taking on something new in a safe environment.

The new 250-metre distance allows participants to swim, splash or doggy paddle in the bay area of Alton Water.

The distance is the equivalent of ten lengths of a 25-metre pool and is the perfect event for new or nervous swimmers or families who want to test the water and get a feel for swimming in the great outdoors.

The new additions mean there will be seven distances on offer at Suffolk's biggest open water swimming event when it returns this June, from beginner to those looking for the ultimate marathon swim challenge.

The event also features farmers markets, musical entertainment and unrivalled spectator support.

Alex Jackson, Great Swim Project Manager, said: “We're delighted to be able to add two new distances to the Great East Swim this year.

“The Great East SwimRun is an event that has proved extremely popular across other locations in the series and we're excited to be able to bring it to Alton Water.

“The course will offer views of some of the Suffolk countryside's stunning locations as well as offering a challenge to those who are looking to take on something new and exciting.

“The addition of the Great East Swim250 means that more swimmers than ever can enjoy a great day of sport in the region.”
