What A Year
It's Been!

2021 In Review

Staging the UKs first televised running event since March 2020, a landmark Great North Run celebration, the UK’s first ever 10k race for visually impaired runners in Bristol, and spectacular events in Manchester & Portsmouth. 2021 wasn’t quite the year we had planned, but it was so good to be back running together!

Over 100,000 runners joined us on a start line in 2021, running for a new PB, for charity, to conquer a challenge and for a sense of normality. With social distancing, staggered start times, arrival zones, and even new baggage storage protocols, it was a new challenge for us as well, but delivering safe & enjoyable events for all is what we do.

We can look back and be proud of what we were able to achieve together this year.

Our 2021 Recap

We started January with a RUN AWAY FROM 2020 themed virtual challenge, full of optimism for a better year ahead. Our Great Run Solo challenges aimed to keep you moving and motivated through the restrictions, and over 15,000 of you made it to the virtual finish line, claiming a hard-earned medal for your efforts. As Summer approached, we turned our attention back to doing what we do best, organising great mass participation running events. The Great North 10k kicked us off in July, followed by a momentous 40th Great North Run; in many ways this year was very different to the previous 39 years, but it remained true to its spirit and was equally as special.

The Great Bristol Run was next, bringing a brilliant spectacle back to the South West and staging the inaugural Bristol VI Runners challenge, the UKs first ever event for visually impaired runners. The buzz was also back in Manchester as a swarm of runners returned to the city’s streets, with roaring crowds and Mancuniun spirit in abundance. The Great South Run provided a fitting finale with 20,000 runners conquering their goals on the stunning South Coast. Seeing Eilish McColgan break the European 10-mile record was one of many memorable moments from an action packed weekend!

The Wait is Nearly Over

Sadly, we couldn’t bring all Great Run events back in 2021; the knock-on effects of covid and a condensed events calendar among other operational challenges meant it was another year without the Great Scottish Run and Great Birmingham Run. We’re already counting down the days until the Great Birmingham Run on 1 May 2022, and seeing Glasgow come alive on Great Scottish Run weekend next October.

Roll On 2022

We absolutely love setting the stage for you to Be Your Greatest – building your memorable start lines, motivating you every step of the way, and sharing your finish line celebrations. We’re already working hard to make next year’s events the best they’ve ever been, with even more on course entertainment, chunkier medals, enhanced post event celebrations, and much more. We’ll be back bigger and better in 2022 and we hope to see you there.

We’ve created a series of highlights of the best bits from 2021, we hope you enjoy. Thank you for sticking with us, have a very merry Christmas, and we’ll see you in the New Year!
