We wonder how many people can relate to the mental phases of running an event.
ALARM IT’S HERE! CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS
Make sure you’ve got a good night’s sleep ahead of the big day and that you’ve planned ahead!
CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S FINALLY HERE. I’M ON THE START LINE
Time to collect yourself, take on any last-minute fluids, maybe have a banana or a gel, and warm up properly. If you need to go to the toilet, now’s your chance
REMEMBER, DON’T GO OFF TOO FAST
You’ll be tempted to set off quickly and zig zag between the crowds in order to nail a fast time, but all you’ll be doing is wasting precious energy and you’ll be running further while you’re at it! Settle into a steady pace and leave enough in the tank for the second half of your run to have a go at that PB.
AH, I’M RUNNING! SLOW DOWN, SLOW DOWN
The first two miles of your run is when your body adapts to the situation, so your breathing will settle down, your muscles will warm up and everything will click.
THE CROWDS ARE AWESOME. OH, IS THAT A TWINGE IN MY FOOT?
Keep it together - make sure you’re not running into any traffic, obstructing others and potentially injuring yourself. A safe distance around you will ensure that you and other runners will complete their run worry-free.
KIND OF OUT OF BREATH. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE TRAINED A LITTLE BIT FOR THIS
Depending on the event, you will need to have ran close to or matching the distance in training so that you’re in the best possible shape. Respect the challenge!
OK, MIND OFF THE BODY. FOCUS ON THE PERSON IN FRONT
Focusing on a target or a goal is an excellent way to concentrate during a run, especially the longer distances. Imagine how you will cross the finish line, visualise your great moment, which will help you stay positive. Picking a person in front to overtake is a good short-term target as well!
SOOO THIRSTY. SOOO HUNGRY. HOW MUCH CAN I EAT AFTER THIS?
The answer is everything. You’ve trained so well that you’ve earned a treat. Just think of all the days where you’ve told yourself no - this is your chance to have a blow out!
HOW MUCH LONGER DO I HAVE TO ENDURE THIS?
Don’t endure it, enjoy it! Focus on the mile you are in and keep chalking them off. If you break your run down into bitesize pieces you’ll find it will fly by!
WHY DID I DO THIS AGAIN? NEVER AGAIN
There will always be a voice in your head filling you with negative thoughts - that’s completely natural. Just think of the end goal.
I CAN SEE THE FINISH LINE. WOW! I’VE DONE IT!
There it is! If you’ve got anything left in the legs, end your run strongly and enjoy that finish line feeling!
SHALL WE SIGN UP FOR NEXT YEAR?
Of course you will! Find your next event here greatrun.org/events
