Great North Run
57,000 determined and dedicated runners make the Great North Run the World’s biggest and best half marathon – famous for its warm North East welcome, unbeatable atmosphere and the millions raised for good causes. Individual places for 2021 are not currently available, but you can secure a number through one of our many charities (below).
We should have celebrated the 40th Great North Run in 2020, but the impact of Covid-19 put our celebrations on hold. We’re looking forward to marking that monumental milestone this September instead, while doing everything we can to keep you safe in these unprecedented times. We’ll be unveiling our GNR40 campaign in the coming months.
Unsurprisingly, most people who secured a place for 2020 chose to roll it over, so the 2021 event is already at capacity.
There are a number of charity places still available so if you want to join us on that historic start line get in touch with one of our charities listed under ‘Run for Charity’. If you’re an Elite Athlete, you can find out more about Elite entry here.
We’ve created a series of celebratory events in the run up to the 40th Great North Run.
They’re open to everyone, regardless of whether you have a place on the start line in September.

Run Up to Race Day
Following on from the hugely popular challenge last year, we’re bringing Great North Run Solo back again in 2021! Great North Run Solo is an 8 week challenge starting on 19 July and finishing on 12 September, the day of the 40th Great North Run.
The challenge is to complete 25 runs (or more) in the build-up to the event and is designed to guide you through your training, keep you motivated and get you in start-line shape. However, the challenge is open to everyone, regardless of whether you have a place in this year’s Great North Run.
Kick off your Summer of running with the Great North 10k, an annual fixture in the North East running calendar.
Starting and finishing in Gateshead International Stadium and running along the formidable River Tyne, it’s a great 10k to warm you up for the Autumn event season.
