Katie Cutler, the Gateshead beautician who raised over £300,000 for pensioner Alan Barnes after he was mugged earlier this year, will be honorary starter for the Morrisons Great North 10k this Sunday 5 July.

The 22-year-old mum, who was recently awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, will be joined by Tracey Cramond, who also became a household name last September when she was plucked from thousands of participants as the millionth finisher of the Morrisons Great North Run. The half marathon was the first running event in the world to achieve this milestone.

Both women will set the runners on their way before running the 10k themselves for the first time.

Katie, who has since set up the Katie Cutler Foundation in a bid to help other people who are in less fortunate situations around the UK, will be running to raise awareness of her new charity.

As well as taking on the 10k, millionth finisher Tracey will also return to the Morrisons Great North Run in September, and is continuing to raise funds for Butterwick Hospice. She has currently raised £500, but would like to quadruple that amount to pay for a cinema in the children's sensory room.

The 10k is the sister event to the Morrisons Great North Run, Britain's biggest running event, and will see up to five-thousand runners cross the finish line on the athletics track inside Gateshead International Stadium.

Now in its seventh year, the event takes in iconic landmarks on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside including concert venue Sage Gateshead, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
