Mccolgan Shines On Great South Run’S Day Of Celebration
EILISH MCCOLGAN smashed her mum's Scottish 10-mile record as she successfully retained her Simplyhealth Great South Run crown as the world famous race celebrated its 30th anniversary.
Her victory signalled the fourth time a McColgan has won in Portsmouth, with mum Liz tasting victory twice on the South Coast in the 1990s.
The pre-race favourite Chris Thompson failed to win an unprecedented fourth Simplyhealth Great South Run though, as Marc Scott picked up his maiden victory in the event which was staged for the 30th time today having been launched in 1990.
McColgan swept home in 51.38, almost four minutes ahead of second place Verity Ockenden in 55.15. Eilish had targeted Liz's national record of 52.00 and the Scot duly smashed it with a display of imperious road running, leading from gun to tape.
Jenny Nesbitt finished third in 55.18 while there were also strong showings from Holly Archer and Aly Dixon in 55.32 and 56.27 respectively.
In the men's race, Thompson could not match the pace set by the leading pack, despite Scott finishing a second slower than the 2018 winning time.
The Richmond and Zetland athlete finished in 46.57, closely followed by Ben Connor in 47.16. Emile Cairess finished third, also breaking the British under-23 10-mile record with a time of 47.32. Thompson finished in 12th, almost three minutes after Scott.
