The Simplyhealth Great South Run has grown into a festival of sport on the South coast, with the iconic weekend spanning across five events over two days.

The day before the world's biggest 10 mile running event, thousands of runners soak up the electric atmosphere in Portsmouth and Southsea by taking part in the Simplyhealth Great South 5k, the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great South Run and the brand new Simplyhealth Canine Run.

Runners, joggers and walkers can experience their own moment of victory on Saturday 21 October and have the bonus of the scenic views of the Isle of Wight and the Solent.

Here's five things you can expect from Saturday's events:

All ages and abilities

No matter what your pace or motivation, age, shape or running ability, there's something for everyone at the Simplyhealth Great South Run.

The weekend kicks off with 1,000 runners, joggers and walkers lining up for the Simplyhealth Great South 5k. It's the perfect event if you're aiming for something shorter than 10 miles or for those who are new to running.

Then 2,000 kids get the chance to have their own finish line moment and to wear their medals with pride at the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great South Run, taking on a 1.5k and 2.5k course on the sea front.

The events make Saturday a great day out for the family, with runners of the future as young as 3-years-old taking part.

Four-legged Friends

It's not just humans who love running! For the first time at the Simplyhealth Great South Run weekend, the event is offering the opportunity for people to get fit with their four-legged friend at the Simplyhealth Canine Run!

It's the perfect opportunity to be active with a canine companion across 2.5k, starting and finishing on the Southsea seafront.

Kicking off at 9am and with the 100 entries already snapped up, you'll be guaranteed to see a furore of furry friends on Clarence Esplanade.

Activities

Aside from running, there's a host of activities taking place across the day on Saturday 20 October.

Make the most of your day at the Simplyhealth Active Zone where you'll be able to get a snapshot of your body health, check your reflexes, and capture an animated GIF of you with your well-deserved medal, so you can share your great achievement with friends and family on social media.

Not forgetting treats for dogs, Hounded will be on site to provide information to runners around exercising and feeding your pooch, as well as offering hydration slurps to every canine finisher. Dogs can also get their paws on free samples of Laughing Dog food and goodie bags.

Guest Athletes

Participants of all of the Simplyhealth Great South Run Saturday events will be set on their way by guest elite athletes who are taking part in the 10-mile event the next day.

The Simplyhealth Great South Run is broadcast live on Channel 5 and is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, with the elites are looking to inspire the next Sir Mo Farah or Paula Radcliffe who may be lining at for their first ever running event on Saturday 20 October.

Celebrations by the Sea

With all of the Saturday events starting and finishing on Clarence Esplanade, all participants are guaranteed a fast and flat course with not a hill in sight!

You'll also have the scenic views of the Isle of Wight and Southsea Common, with crowds of supporters and a cheering point from the Batala Drumming Band to keep the celebrations going all the way to the finish line.
