Two giants of the financial and political worlds were crowned overall winners of the Arcadis Business Challenge at this year’s Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run.

The city's annual half marathon took place on Sunday, October 15, the same day as the first-ever Birmingham International Marathon, and featured the hotly-anticipated Business Challenge.

Large Business category overall winners were HSBC, led by UK CEO Ian Stuart, who took part in the half marathon three years after undergoing hip replacement. The HSBC runners’ accumulated four fastest times were 07:22:09.

The money raised by Ian and the 22-strong HSBC team will go towards HSBC UK’s commitment to raise £3 million for Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Scotland during their three-year partnership.

Winners of the Medium Business category were the West Midlands Combined Authority, led by Mayor for the West Midlands, Andy Street CBE, with an accumulated time of 06:26:18.

The ‘Mayor’s Movers’ are raising funds for Cure Leukaemia’s £1 million appeal to expand the globally significant Centre for Clinical Haematology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Business Challenge trophies are handed out to fastest teams according to their business size, with the four fastest times posted by each team accumulated to pick the overall winners.

Any business entering 12 or more participants automatically receives a plaque engraved with the company’s name.

Ian Stuart, HSBC CEO UK, said: “I had a hip replacement a few years ago and it was causing a few problems in the run-up to the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run.

“It was touch-and-go whether I would be able to take part, but I am pleased to say I did and I completed it in a respectable sub-two hours.

“The event itself was fantastic, the atmosphere was buzzing and the support from local people along the route was important in driving us on all the way to the finish.

“I’d like to thank everyone who marshalled and helped organise the event, and those who sponsored my HSBC UK colleagues me, helping provide important funds to help those living with and affected by dementia.”
