TV personality and The Only Way Is Essex favourite, Ferne McCann, will be tackling two Great events when she takes on the Great Newham London Swim and the Morrisons Great Newham London Run on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July this year.
The Essex style icon was at the Royal Victoria Docks in London today getting some tips from Olympic open water swimming silver medallist, Dave Davies, ahead of her first ever open water swimming event.
Ferne said, “I'm really looking forward to taking on these two events in two such amazing venues. Keeping fit and healthy is really important to me and setting yourself the challenge of an event is the best way to stay motivated.
“Swimming in the open water, in a wetsuit, will be a whole new experience, so I definitely need to get some training in! I run regularly though, so I'm excited about the Morrisons Great Newham London Run, and finishing in the stadium will be an amazing experience.”
The Great Newham London Swim is a unique opportunity to take the plunge in the shadow of the O2 Arena and Canary Wharf, and swim alongside the ExCeL centre. It is a fantastic way to experience open water swimming in the heart of the vibrant East End for swimmers of all ages and abilities.
Dave Davies said, “Open water swimming can be really daunting if you've never swum outside of a pool, but if you enjoy swimming it's one of the best ways to get active.
“Once you've experienced the freedom of enjoying the water without lanes, walls or chlorine it can become very addictive!”
Ferne, alongside all those participating in the Morrisons Great Newham London Run, will get the chance to have their very own Olympic moment as they finish inside the Stadium and cross the famous finish line, which saw Olympic greats Usain Bolt, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah become champions in 2012. The course will also take in the sights of Lee Valley VeloPark, the London Aquatics Centre and the Copper Box Arena.
Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, said: “I hope others are motivated by those taking part in Newham's Great Events to join in too, whether for a personal fitness goal or as a challenge for charity.
“This year, Newham will also be at the heart of many sporting events including the Diamond League Athletics competition and five of the Rugby World Cup matches. These events form part of our commitment to delivering the Olympic legacy and ensuring that as many of our residents are inspired and can take part in the many sporting opportunities on offer.”
