The Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10k is making its return to the city once again on Sunday 5 May.

Every year, 13,000 people take on the challenge in Bristol, crossing the finish line on Anchor Road near to Millennium Square.

Running along the stunning sights of Bristol as part of one of the country's biggest 10ks is quite an experience and it's one you're likely to never forget.

If you’re thinking about signing up to take on your own challenge at the event this year, whatever your reason for running, here’s all of things you can expect:

1) A Stunning Route

The Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10k is well-known among Bristolians and takes in some of the city's most famous landmarks, such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the vibrant waterfront, before you finish near to the hustle and bustle of Millennium Square.

Be sure to smile for the cameras as you pass under the bridge twice, think of your future profile picture!

2) A Huge Warm-Up

Make sure you arrive promptly to the assembly area on Anchor Road where you have the chance to warm-up with 13,000 others! The sight of a huge crowd waving their arms to motivational music is one not to miss and is sure to get you ready to run. The warm-up begins at 9.17am.

3) Hundreds of University Students

University challenge will take on a whole new meaning as two of Bristol's academic institutions have signed up hundreds of runners, joggers and walkers at the 10k. The University of Bristol and the University of the West of England will all be taking part in their own red wave.

Be sure to give them a cheer as many are taking on the 10k for the first time!

4) Pacers!

If you’re looking to make it to the finish line in a particular time, the 10k has a team of 13 pacers who will be on hand to help you achieve your goal.

There’ll be pacers from 40 minutes to 1hour 30 minutes, depending on your wave allocation.

5) Four Music Points

Prepare to be entertained during your 10k challenge by a host of local musicians from across the region.

Expect to see:

  • African Sambista drum and dance at 1k
  • Drummers at 2k and 5.5k
  • Batala Samba band at 6k
  • Frampton Footwarmers at 8k

6) Support in the Skies

As you head along the Portway along the Avon Gorge, look to the skies to spot the support from above from the Teenage Cancer Trust’s hot air balloon.

7) The Turnaround

You’ll hit the 5k mark on the Portway after turning around and heading back into the city centre surrounded by the gathering crowds.

8) Prince Street Support

As you head towards Prince Street, you’ll be greeted by a wall of noise from the Children’s Hospice South West who set up their cheering point there at 9k every year. It’s the perfect motivator before you reach the finishing straight.

9) The Finish Line Feeling

Crossing the finish line on Anchor Road to cheering crowds, you'll feeling elation, exhaustion and joy as you complete your 10k challenge.

10) Massage and Stretch Out

Head to the event village in Millennium Square where Simplyhealth will be offering pre-booked massages and their stretch zone to take you through some exercises to help your muscles recover.

11) Free Food Sampling

Millennium Square will also be packed with exhibitors and sponsors, offering treats and freebies to runners. Expect samples from the likes of Nando's, Wagamama and Kelloggs to name a few!

12) Charities in the Event Village

If you’re running for a particular cause, or just want to pay a visit to find out more about them, there’ll be a host of national and local charities in Waterfront Square. The Grand Appeal, St Peter’s Hospice, Mummy’s Star and the NSPCC are all part of this year’s charity village.

13) The Post-Run Bling

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of putting on your exclusive medal and finisher’s t-shirt that you collect once you’ve crossed the line.

Combine it with an ice-cold pint and the perfect post-run meal. You've earned it!
