Choosing from all the multivitamin formulas can be a little bewildering so making the right choice for you may feel like quite a task.

Remember that a good multi should offer an array of nutrients that I like to think of as the foundation, or if you like, your underwear (Read Do I even need a multivitamin here for more info). It should offer most of the nutrients that are associated with energy, the immune system, skin and bone health, brain function and so on. It doesn’t have the same immediately identifiable role that individual specific supplements may have, but like a good and varied diet, those nutrients are the foundation.

The good news is that most brands that have a selection of multivitamins will have done a lot of the work for you by highlighting who may benefit most from the formula. They will offer all the essentials but with some tweaks here and there, as well as expertly chosen extras that reflect the way that nutrition can support each of us individually.

There are multi formulas specifically for men and women, for when planning pregnancy, or for when you just feel you need a little more.

If you’re vegetarian, then you may choose a multi specifically tailored to your nutritional requirements, one that is rich in iron and also contains B12 and B complex plus co-enzymes. Or you may prefer a multivitamin towards supporting energy-yielding metabolism, perhaps one boosted by 75 mg of 8 key B vitamins.

Many people opt for a multi that is rich in plant foods, sourced in wholefoods, like the green powders you may have seen on social media but in an easy tablet form rather than having to mix up a drink.

Whatever you choose, remember that on top of a decent diet, eating a variety of foods, your multi supplies foundation nutrients but allows the option to finesse your choice to reflect your personal situations and preferences.
