But whichever tried and tested technique you use, the real debate is always about the topping. What makes the perfect pancake partner, especially if you’re running?

Well, we did a bit of research into the usual pancake toppings suspects – and some more unusual options – to find out, and we’ve got five tasty finalists for you to try. Which one will you go for?

First up, Lemon and sugar: it’s an oldie but a goodie. This little citrus fruit packs a lot of vitamin B and C, boosting your immune system and helping you avoid missing runs due to pesky bugs. Limit the not-so-good sugar, or swap it out for a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup.

Next, we’re nuts about banana and walnut. Add in some slices of banana and some chopped walnuts for a taste and texture sensation. Banana also provides a dose of vitamin B6, helping convert carbs into useable energy, plus walnuts contain omega-3 fats to help aid running recovery. Sounds good to us!

Then there’s Berrymania. All fresh fruit is good, but blueberries are especially high in antioxidants and raspberries are classed as low-GI, meaning they release energy slowly and help you avoid a crash-and-burn situation. Add in a dollop of whipped cream for some extra indulgence.

How about a protein kick with peanut butter and apple? Peanut butter is packed with good fats, protein and carbs and keeps you feeling full for longer, whereas chopped apple adds some low-calorie sweetness and fibre. An unexpectedly delicious combination.

And we’ve saved the undisputed king of pancake toppings – well, here in the Great Run office, anyway – till last: chocolate spread. Dark chocolate is the healthiest option as it contains less sugar and more antioxidants. Mix things up a bit by stirring chocolate chips into your batter, sprinkling in some cocoa powder or go classic by topping with Nutella – you’re in training, after all!

So tell us, what will you be having on your pancakes? We’d love to hear from you – join the conversation over on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter
