5,000 participants will take on the Simplyhealth Great North 10k Gateshead this weekend, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The North East’s biggest 10k returns on Sunday 8 July, with thousands of people running to be their greatest for fun, fitness and fundraising.

Runners will be set on their way by Metro Radio’s Steve Furnell, who is taking on the 10k himself to raise money for Cash for Kids.

Steve, who is one half of Steve and Karen’s Breakfast Show, is fresh from epic running challenge from Kielder to Tynemouth where he raised over £7,000 for charity.

They will take on a scenic course that passes Sage Gateshead, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

The route also passes under the Tyne Bridge, an iconic feature of its sister event, the Simplyhealth Great North Run.

Over half of runners taking on their 10k challenge are going on to take part in the world’s biggest half marathon in September.

Participants experience their own unique finish line feeling on the track in the famous Gateshead International Stadium, with their family and friends able to cheer on from the stands.

Meanwhile, the Gurkhas will once again be out in force. Around 200 of the Nepalese soldiers, based at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, will run as part of their fitness training.

The Simplyhealth Great North Family Run, which was introduced in 2016, also returns, with children of all ages and abilities taking on their first running event inside Gateshead International Stadium.

400 people will tackle a one-mile route around the stadium with their families.

Kerry Simpson, Communications Manager at the Great Run Company, said: “The Simplyhealth Great North 10k Gateshead continues to grow, and is now a firm favourite the North East’s running calendar ten years on, with many people using it as training for the Simplyhealth Great North Run nine weeks later.

“The Family Run is a stepping stone for runners of the future, and Gateshead International Stadium provides the perfect setting.”
