THE Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run boasts runners of all shapes, sizes and ages – with long-time participant Colin Pilkington one of the oldest.

Colin is 81 years old and has taken part in the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run a total of 13 times, only missing one since it launched in 2003.

He runs to raise money for The Christie cancer centre, in memory of his late wife Eileen and his son-in-law.

Colin will be back for 2017 for the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run’s 15th birthday on Sunday, 28 May – and is looking forward to another big day out.

He said: “I’ve loved all of them. It keeps me fit and healthy. The best part is the finish. Getting a big shout as I go through.

“There is so much to see – the crowds and the bands, the Christie bus, thinking about my wife who I’m doing it for and others.

“There’s that many with cancer – there’s four near me on our estate that are all having treatment. It’s all for a good cause.

“The crowds are unbelievable. It’s fully lined, it never used to be early on but now the kiddies giving high fives and cheering, shouting ‘come on granddad’. I love it.”
