Cricket Star Trott Signs Up For Birmingham 10K

Jonathan Trott will be embarking on a run chase even while Warwickshire CCC are enjoying a break from action – after signing up for his first Great Birmingham 10k.
The former England batsman has been a half-marathon regular in recent years and is now preparing for a shorter innings on the city’s streets on Sunday, May 1.
Trott will use the challenge to top up his early-season fitness levels between the Bears’ Specsavers County Championship fixtures against Yorkshire and Somerset, which start on April 24 and May 8 respectively.
The 34-year-old won’t be short of running partners. Warwickshire’s Director of Cricket Dougie Brown and Commercial Director Gareth Roberts have both entered teams, comprising club staff, into the Business Challenge.
But it may feel like a busman’s holiday – as the Edgbaston Stadium perimeter again features on the 10k course.
“This will be my first Great Birmingham 10k and I’m looking forward to it,” said Trott, who is working on his autobiography, which will be published this autumn.
“I know that the ending, with that hill, will be a challenge.
“When I’ve run the half marathon, it’s come at the end of the season, so this will be a bit of a fitness thing at the start of my cricket season.
“It’s a great event for the city and something great to do at the beginning of summer, as it’s a good way for people to plan some fitness work.
“Running the 10k in May and continuing during the summer sets you up nicely for the half marathon.”
Trott and Warwickshire have been big supporters of Birmingham-based blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia for several years.
The three-times Ashes winner believes improving fitness levels while raising money for vital causes is a great double motivation to sign up for the 10k.
“I live just down the road from Cure Leukaemia’s headquarters at the QE and have a close affinity with the charity,” added the 2011 ICC Cricketer of the Year.
“With Cure Leukaemia also being one of Warwickshire’s charity partners, it’s good to take an interest in what you’re supporting, learning the ins and outs of their work and how it’s changing people’s lives.”
