After a stint in intensive care left 6-year-old Eleanore Guthrie unable to take part in the 2022 Mini Great North Run, she is looking forward to running in this year’s AJ Bell Mini Great North Run, along with her 9-year-old sister, Alba, who is taking part in the Junior event, on Saturday 9 September.

Eleanore was diagnosed with a brain tumour at 4-years-old, which caused visual impairment. Despite this, she has not given up running, having already participated in the Brainathlon event with her family . The event involves walking 10 miles, climbing 2500 steps and running 15 miles over the 19 –25 April, to raise money for three leading neurological research charities: Brain Research UK, Brain Tumour Research and Epilepsy Research UK. Eleanore did parts of the event alongside other members of her family, including mum, Karen and dad, Stuart, who officially completed the event.

Whilst the AJ Bell Mini Great North Run is her next challenge, it’s not a new one. She also ran the event in 2021 – the same year that she received her brain tumour diagnosis. Her mum, Karen, described just how proud her entire family are of her resilience:

“2021 was a really big challenge as it was the year she was diagnosed. She ran the whole way which we were not expecting. Granda met us halfway round and helped to keep her going. Mammy, Daddy, Auntie Kate, Uncle Lee and Uncle Gavin all cried when she finished the run! We were so proud of what she had achieved.”

The family, who live in Jarrow, are all keen runners. Big sister Alba started taking part in the Junior event when she was only 3-years-old. Mum, Karen, takes part in the Great North Run every year and dad, Stuart, has also ran in the event 5 times.

Eleanore has been preparing for the run by going on plenty of walks with her puppy and doing some runs around the garden. She cannot wait to take part and soak up the atmosphere on the 9th of September.

The AJ Bell Junior & Mini Great North Run is the UK’s biggest and best kids running event. Taking place on 9 September on the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside, with plenty of encouragement and high fives from the crowds, it’s an action-packed day with an atmosphere like no other.

Mini runners aged 3-8 take on a daring 1.2km dash, while Juniors aged 9-16 tackle a 4km supercharged sprint.
