Great Manchester Run Is Family Affair For Denise
This year’s Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run will be particularly special for Denise Welch, as she prepares to run with her son for the first time.
The actress and TV presenter will return to the 10k start line on Sunday 20 May with her family in tow, including her artist husband Lincoln Townley, 17-year-old son Louis Healy and his friend Grace Ferguson, the granddaughter of Sir Alex Ferguson.
They are all running in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust, of which Denise has been an ambassador for the last five years, although she doesn’t think they’ll stick together for long, saying:
“We will start together, but I expect that will be the last I see of Louis before the finish line, because I’m sure he won’t want to be seen running with his mum!”
Denise, Louis and Grace recently visited young people with cancer at the Teenage Cancer Trust funded facility within the Oncology Unit at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.
Denise and her family will join thousands of people at a running celebration in the heart of Manchester when the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run returns next month. They will join Teenage Cancer Trust’s biggest ever Great Manchester Run team.
With a 10k and a half marathon to choose from, the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run is a running event like no other. The event is known for its buzzing atmosphere, incredible supporters and the booming Manchester anthems that rock the city’s streets.
She continued: “Running and I are not natural bedfellows but the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run is such a wonderful event which brings the people of Manchester together to support thousands of incredible charities.
“The atmosphere on the day is something very special which brings the best out of everyone.
“It’s so lovely the amount of support and encouragement I receive along the route. I like to keep moving – otherwise if I stopped too long I would never get started again, but every step of the way the incredible crowds cheer you on and shout your name out which really gives you that extra boost to get you to the end.
“Your fellow runners also encourage you, giving you that pat on the back or chatting to you just when you’re starting to flag.”
The event also features the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great Manchester Run on the same day, giving young runners and budding athletes the chance to experience the buzz and even share the same start line as their mums and dads.
