The Great Run Company, organisers of the Morrisons Great Run series, has purchased the iconic publication ‘Athletics Weekly' from previous owners of Athletics Weekly Limited.

Founded in 1945, Athletics Weekly is the world's only weekly printed athletics magazine, and alongside the fast growing athleticsweekly.com, covers news, results, fixtures, coaching and product advice for all aspects of athletics, including track and field, cross-country, road racing and race walking. It is regarded as the authoritative voice of athletics in the UK. As part of the acquisition a new independent editorial board will be established, to be chaired by Dave Gordon, formerly head of major sporting events at the BBC.

Richard Hughes, who will continue as publisher of the title, said “The Great Run Company will help take the magazine on the next stage of its journey and will allow for more investment in the digital arena. I am excited about the future for AW.”

“Athletics Weekly, athleticsweekly.com with greatrun.org and our associated event magazines will come together in a newly formed division called "Great Run Publishing".

In his role as publisher Richard Hughes will report to Mark Hollinshead who is the new incoming Group Chief Executive of the Great Run Company.

Last week, FilmNova, a division of the Great Run Company, secured the TV rights for the IAAF Diamond League meetings for the UK in a five year deal running from 2015 until 2020.

The agreement, which was reached with IMG, will see more coverage of the prestigious athletics meetings in the UK, with extensive airtime secured on BBC television and Eurosport UK.
