As part of their ongoing commitment to community and charity, 32 members of staff from Joseph Holt Brewery will participate in the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run 10K on Sunday 21 May, raising funds for renowned cancer centre The Christie. This will be the thirteenth year the business has been represented at the event.

Joseph Holt Brewery, an independent regional family brewer, has a long-standing history of charity involvement with The Christie, which incredibly dates to 1914 when Sir Edward Holt I raised £20,000 (equivalent to £2 million today) to fund the Holt Radium Institute, which later merged with The Christie hospital in 1933.

Jane Kershaw, Director and sixth generation at Joseph Holt, said, “The Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute hold a special place in our hearts, and the hearts of our staff and customers. We are proud to support their pioneering work with our fundraising efforts.

“There has been a team from Joseph Holt taking part in the Great Manchester Run since 2010. It’s a really important fundraising opportunity for us. Mark Norbury, our Joseph Holt Pub Director, has been a member of the running team since the beginning and our Head Brewer, Phil Parkinson, along with various Area Managers have participated in multiple runs including the Great Manchester Run 10K and Great North Run in Newcastle in previous years.

Joseph Holt Brewery donated an impressive £174,507 in 2020 to redevelop The Christie’s CT scanning department, including the installation of a state-of-the-art 4D CT scanner – the first of its kind in the UK. The brewery is now working towards a new charity appeal for The Christie, with a target of raising £500,000 as part of Joseph Holt’s 175th-anniversary celebrations in 2024.

Louise Stimson, head of fundraising at the Christie Charity, says: “The support that Joseph Holt Brewery has shown to The Christie Charity over the years is incredible. We are extremely proud of the partnership that has been forged over more than 100 years, and we cannot thank the staff who are taking part in the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run on our behalf enough. We are very grateful.”

The AJ Bell Great Manchester Run will see businesses from across the North West take part in the Business Challenge a great opportunity to encourage a healthy outlook for staff, engage in all-important team building and focus on charity fundraising.
