Whether you’re there because you want to experience unbeatable on-course entertainment, race past historic landmarks, or celebrate in the post-run event zones, the AJ Bell Great South Run has so much to offer.

You simply have to be there to feel the feeling: the start line butterflies, the finish line joy, and all the incredible moments in between. There are some things which really do set the AJ Bell Great South Run apart from any other run you might have done before – read on to find out more.

HMS Victory, Southsea Castle, and the Historic Dockyard

Iconic landmarks line this route, offering something different and exciting at every turn. The route starts by heading along Portsmouth Harbour, towards the Historic Dockyard, home to the famous warship HMS Victory, which is actually the world’s oldest naval vessel still in commission. HMS Victory was also Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, way back in 1805.

During the second half of the course, you’ll head into Southsea, past the famous Southsea Castle. Even if you’re not a history buff, you’ll be captivated by the views of this intriguing fort, constructed by Henry VIII back in 1544, and the expanse of sea which serves as its backdrop. On race day, it also doubles up as a “we did it!” marker for runners.

Breathtaking Views

Throughout the entirety of the course, you’ll be treated to stunning views. Highlights include Southsea Common, Portsmouth Harbour, and Canoe Lake. There’s also the fact that a large portion of the route is along the spectacular south coast, allowing runners to look out on the seafront views and catch their breath with an invigorating sea breeze.

On Course Entertainment To Keep You Going

It wouldn’t be an AJ Bell Great Run event without rocking on course entertainment, but the AJ Bell Great South Run has some extra special acts featured along the course, which you can’t miss.

First up, the Batala band bring the samba-reggae percussion music, pumping up the energy levels of runners and spectators alike.

The Hush Club will also be in attendance, with their signature sequin DJ booths, bringing great music and excellent vibes. And just look at that sparkle!

Local Support Lining The Route

Portsmouth comes out in full force to enthusiastically support the AJ Bell Great South Run weekend – expect cheers, flags, high-fives, Jelly Babies, and lots more – Portsmouth’s supporters will keep your spirits and motivation up the whole way with round.

Fast and Flat Over a Unique Distance

The 10 miler offers a great running distance in between a 10k and half-marathon. Even better, the course itself is unusually flat, making fast times and PBs super achievable.

Doing it Together

Whether you’re taking on the AJ Bell Great South Run to fundraise for a remarkable cause, to achieve a health goal, or simply to have some fun, know that you’ll be lining up along Clarence Esplanade with 20,000 other determined runners. En route, expect to see fellow runners dressed in all sorts – Great South Runners have acquired a reputation for fancy dress.
